Status updates on Facebook help people understand their friends and the people around them–how they’re feeling, what they’re doing and what they’re thinking. In the United States alone, people on Facebook are sharing hundreds of millions of words every day, thousands per second, in status updates. When taken as a whole, these words offer a unique barometer into the issues, world events and thoughts that are connecting people.

In the tradition of year-end lists, we’re introducing Facebook Memology. “Memology” refers to the study of how “memes,” or new ideas and trends, are spreading on Facebook. For this year’s list, the Facebook Data Team mapped the top trending words and phrases in U.S. status updates for 2009.

While significant news events and celebrities made the list, more personal topics like family, religion and even emerging digital slang were as common—no doubt reflecting the way people share their daily lives with friends on Facebook.

To generate the list, we started by looking at how many times each phrase with length from one-to-four words occurred in U.S. Facebook status updates, then we computed the rate at which each phrase occurred in 2009 compared to 2008. Using some data-mining methodsdetailed here, we analyzed important bursts in activity around words and series of words to find the key trends for the year. All personally identifiable information was removed from the status updates to conduct this analysis, and no one at Facebook read the individual status updates.

Because quite a few words and phrases were related to each other and correlated contextually, we grouped some of them together to form the final list that follows.

Twitter in German Language

The year 2009 might or might not be remember in the history of social networking. There have been many show downs though. Twitter has been amongst the leaders all new apps and services. Not only its audience has swelled many fold but it has also started services in two countries outside. Twitter has also launched itself in German Language as well. You can set your language preferences by visiting the preference page and select German Language from a variety of other languages. Let’s see how 2010 unfolds for the social networking and what new languages are hosted by different social networking sites and if the next language to be unfolded is your regional language.

Linkedin – New Faceted Search Feature Added

Here at LinkedIn, we believe that people search is one of the most valuable new areas of search technology. Late last year, we announced the launch of the new people search platform, rebuilt from the ground up. Since that launch, I’m happy to report that the enhancements have resulted in nearly doubling overall search activity on LinkedIn. Thanks for tons of great feedback you provided since we launched that has helped spur these numerous improvements.

Today, I am excited to announce the release of another huge improvement to LinkedIn’s People Search experience: “Faceted Search”.

“Faceted Search” offers dynamic filters that are automatically generated based on your actual query results. These filters let you quickly and easily hone your query over 50 million LinkedIn profiles based on 8 facets: current company, past company, location, relationship, location, industry, school, and profile languages.

A new module titled “Refine By” will include a list of the most relevant facets, based on the actual results of your original query.

The filters are generated in real time for every query by parsing all matching results and extracting the most important attributes. We then present those to you in an intuitive interface that lets you select one or multiple filters per facet. You can refine, expand or stumble upon insightful information by simply clicking on the search options that matter to you.

Faceted Search offers the following benefits to your search experience on LinkedIn:

• Enables True Guided Navigation: A list of filters are generated dynamically for every search in order to guide you through the optimal path to find the most relevant people

• Provides Intuitive Interface: Refining your search is easier than ever with an intuitive user interface that allows you to slice and dice search results by 8 facets

• Improves Precision: As LinkedIn continues to grow by the millions, increasing search space requires increased precision to help you find exactly the right people

• Increases Efficiency: Find talent, business partners, customers or a former colleague faster than ever before.

• Reduces Need for Complex Queries: It significantly reduces the need for complex Boolean queries. This was a particular need we heard from many of our power users.

Twitter service launched in Ireland and Indonesia

Twitter’s SMS service has been launched at both of these countries ( i.e., Indonesia and Ireland). Most important is the fact, that the carrier service launching this service in these countries won’t charge a dime extra and the subscribers will get benefited from their existing subscriptions. The companies which have participated in launching twitter are 3 Indonesia and O2 Ireland. The twitter blog says that the service is quite simple and the subscribers will send and receive messages like an SMS. The customers of 3 Indonesia will enjoy the extra benefit due to additional functionality added. It is said to be the first carrier in Indonesia supporting photos via MMS service through TwitPic. You can send “START” to 89887. For Ireland users, O2 is also the first service starting Twitter SMS in Ireland. For O2 subscribers, send “START” to 51210 or can also signup for Twitter or activate your account through your already made Twitter account. My name is Abdur and I’m part of the Research team here at Twitter. As Chief Scientist, it’s my job to interpret data so we can understand and appreciate how Twitter is constantly evolving. Since it’s the end of the year, we thought it would be interesting to review the topics and issues that captured global attention over the year. In 2009, Twitter’s Trending Topics helped us understand what was happening around the world showing us that people everywhere can be united in concern around important events; excited about a new movie; or geek-out about a major new technology.

Among all the keywords, hashtags, and phrases that proliferated throughout the year, one topic surfaced repeatedly. Twitter users found the Iranian elections the most engaging topic of the year. The terms #iranelection, Iran and Tehran were all in the top-21 of Trending Topics, and #iranelection finished in a close second behind the regular weekly favorite #musicmonday.

These are Twitter’s top Trending Topics across several categories—an interesting time capsule of what was happening as this decade came to a close.
